THERE'S A TRIED-AND-TRUE MAXIM IN COMMUNICATIONS:

Show, Don't Tell

Though the stories we tell in order to persuade others need to have facts as their foundation, facts rarely change minds and usually serve only to confirm what our audience already believes.

If we truly want to reach a wider audience and change hearts and minds, we need to recognize that there’s nothing quite as compelling as an authentic story  – one that doesn’t just tell the audience about an issue but shows why they should care.

Countless studies provide statistics about the power of video storytelling and the role it can play in a communications strategy, but rather than trying to tell of video’s effectiveness, the short clip below can show it.

After participating in Alternative Spring Break (ASB) at college, Anne Chen describes her parents reaction – first when she told them her experience and then after she showed them…

"Let us help you show your story..."

Today I sent the video to a supporter. Not only are they making a donation in response, but they have gotten two more contributions from friends - a wonderful multiplier for such a good program due to your work allowing the story to be told.

…a shining example of the inspirational power of video.

...the video you did is just so perfect, I can't thank you enough.

Steve's story-telling has a light touch and he allows the scenes and subjects to carry the messages. ... His approach has a wonderful result in his final product which is approachable yet quietly dramatic, letting the viewer discover the answer rather than beating them over the head.

…provided a moving testimonial and unique perspective on our organization's mission.

Everyone loves it. It's perfection! Thanks!!!

It has already been invaluable and we've not even released it yet!

I just want to let you know the movie was a total hit! Everyone liked it so much and I saw a few people tearing up. It was a wonderful night and we surpassed our goals! Yahoo…! thanks, Steve.

Our institutional funders also loved it and could see immediate value in their support that no midterm grant report could ever convey.

He captured our essence beautifully.

I just watched it...amazing!!! thank you so much. Your work is incredible. I don't know how you get people to open up like that, and come across so at ease, but wow it is something.

Well, it made me cry so I think that's a good sign!

Working with Steve on our short video was a pleasure. He understood our mission and was able to tell our story in an emotionally compelling way that spoke to a larger audience than we normally reach. His work combines the creativity of an artist's vision with the craft of a highly skilled communicator. Everyone who watches it tells us it not only touched their hearts but now they truly understand why we do what we do - thank you, Steve!

Steve...we are just awe struck by how great this looks and how well
it communicates what we're doing out there.

The end product was magnificent, blending interview narrative, music and images into a story that touched the emotions of everyone who watched it. The video added a level of legitimacy to our event that we simply could not have done ourselves. A truly professional job, and experience. Thank you, Steve!

After viewing the video, the feedback has been that folks finally understand the importance of our mission.

As the video began to play, the entire room fell silent, punctuated only by exuberant applause during a particularly poignant moment. It was wonderful to look around the room and see the pride radiating from the faces of our staff and donors.

Your sensitivity, talent, and experience, capturing this organizational legacy was really on display! Thank you for sharing.
