Personality…

… plus Product equals Brand.

Not surprisingly, nonprofits devote most, if not all, of their attention to creating and informing their audience about the “product” part of Bowie’s equation – their mission, their programs…etc.

Absent “personality,” the message typically falls flat – just another nonprofit looking to educate an indifferent public about [insert problem here].

David Bowie, and the rare nonprofit, cultivate an entertaining persona so that the audience is not just hearing a song, or the message, but are captivated by the messenger as well.

One nonprofit that succeeds in crafting a compelling personality is Wild Bird Fund, a bird rescue organization based in New York City. One can’t help but be entertained, but also engaged, by their social media posts.

Take a tip from David Bowie, and Wild Bird Fund, and consider adding some pizzazz – humor, sarcasm, cuteness, emotion…. personality, to your messaging to make it more entertaining and therefore more likely to hit the mark.
